NASA uses a sounding rocket to take the first multi-point look inside sporadic E layers—high-altitude, thin metallic haze in the upper atmosphere that disrupt radio signals. The rocket flies through one layer while carrying multiple detectors, allowing simultaneous measurements from different locations along the rocket’s path.
The layers form when dust from burned-up meteors vaporizes and then contributes to the production of charged particles at high altitudes. Their behavior is unpredictable, including when they appear and how quickly they dissipate, which has limited scientists’ ability to understand their internal structure.
According to NASA and Phys.org, the rocket mission deploys five detectors through a sporadic E layer at the same time. This coordinated sampling reveals more complexity in the layer than expected, providing new observational detail for models of how the clouds form and evolve and how they interfere with radio propagation. Both sources frame the work as an initial step toward improving understanding of these radio-disrupting atmospheric phenomena.
