WhatsApp is rolling out a bill payments feature in India, letting users find, manage and pay household and utility bills directly within the messaging app. Meta says the service is implemented through the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, expanding the range of routine transactions available inside WhatsApp.
The feature is launching gradually and will be available to Android and iOS users across India over the coming weeks. NDTV reports it supports UPI and card payments, while users can access the function from the WhatsApp home screen via a rupee icon. Both outlets say the service covers a large network of billers and multiple payment categories, including electricity, gas, water and FASTag, as well as insurance and loan or credit card-related repayments.
Across the sources, the main focus is on the feature’s scope and accessibility—covering thousands of billers across dozens of categories and integrating with familiar payment methods. FPJ adds that users can view past and upcoming payments and manage multiple accounts under a single provider, while NDTV emphasizes the app-based billing workflow and BBPS connection.
