Netflix is developing a new live-action television series based on the Dungeons & Dragons setting Ravenloft, according to multiple reports. The project is being developed with Hasbro and its partners, with writer and executive producer John August and executive producer Alfonso Cuarón attached.

Variety reports that Netflix sets the Ravenloft series into development after a separate Dungeons & Dragons project inspired by the setting The Forgotten Realms was scrapped. Deadline similarly frames Ravenloft as a new project with different auspices than the previously reported Forgotten Realms effort, not directly related to that earlier work. Gizmodo adds that the series is described as an origin story focused on the character Count Strahd von Zarovich.

Across the outlets, the shared emphasis is on Netflix’s new Ravenloft series in development, the involvement of August and Cuarón, and Hasbro’s participation. Differences mostly concern the project’s relationship to the canceled Forgotten Realms series and the specific scope described for the story in terms of Strahd’s origin.
