Senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh resigns as the party’s general secretary in-charge of Assam following the Congress’s defeat in the state assembly elections. Singh tenders his resignation with immediate effect, citing the election outcome as deeply disappointing and saying he takes full responsibility for his role in the result. In a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Singh states that it is in the best interest of the organisation for him to step aside to allow for fresh leadership and renewed direction after the party could not meet the expectations of voters in Assam.
The reports also note that the election results give the NDA a large victory, with the BJP securing 82 seats and allies BPF and AGP winning 10 seats each, leading to a two-thirds majority for the coalition. Singh’s resignation follows the party’s broader performance in the polls and is presented as a personal accountability move tied to the outcome.
