MKO documentary about 1993 election to premiere in Nigerian cinemas on October 2

 ‘MKO’, a documentary about the June 12 election and Moshood Abiola, premieres in cinemas across Nigeria on October 2. Directed by Ose Oyamendan and produced by American documentary filmmaker Mark Jonathan Harris, the film follows the tribulations of Abiola — the winner of the June 12, 1993, annulled election — who was later jailed for four years before his death in 1998. In a statement, Oyamendan described ‘MKO’ as “an investigative documentary” featuring accounts from people who witnessed the events, saying the documentary goes beyond Nigerian history and serves as a warning to the world. “This is an investigative documentary about a man, an election, and the global conspiracy that robbed Africa’s largest democracy of her elected leader,” he said.   “It is a story told by those who lived it — presidents, diplomats, politicians, activists, family members, and journalists. It is not just Nigerian history. It is a warning to the world.” Nile Entertainment, the documentary’s distribution company, also described the project as a film that “revisits one of the most defining chapters in Nigeria’s democratic history and the man at its centre”. Several people were interviewed for the documentary, including Ibrahim Babangida, the former head of state who annulled the 1993 election; Thomas Pickering, the American diplomat who led the delegation meeting with Abiola; Abdulsalami Abubakar, Nigeria’s head of state at the time of Abiola’s death; and Theodore Zadok, Abiola’s prison guard.   Others include Walter Carrington, the then American ambassador to Nigeria; Adotei Akwei, managing director of Amnesty International; Wole Soyinka, pro-democracy activist and Nobel laureate; members of Abiola’s family; and the correspondents of The New York Times and Washington Post who were jailed and deported by the dictator.
