A Washington-based lobbyist associated with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar deletes a social media post after a comment from President Bola Tinubu’s aide. Karl Von Batten had announced on the verified X account of his firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., that U.S. President Donald Trump appointed him to a White House presidential commission. The post is removed after criticism and follow-up from Sunday Dare.

Dare says the appointment is to the Commission on Presidential Scholars, which is focused on education and sits under the U.S. Department of Education. He adds that the commission does not deal with foreign policy, national security, or U.S.–Nigeria relations. Sources also note that Von Batten is engaged by Atiku and has previously promoted issues involving the release of U.S. law enforcement records allegedly linked to Tinubu, with some commentators using the episode to debate the reach of lobbying in Nigeria’s politics.
