A 10-year-old boy, identified by his first name Ayoub, is found dead after being trapped in a well in Algeria for four days, civil protection authorities say. Rescuers had been trying to reach him after he fell into the well near his home and drew widespread public attention and social media calls for help.
Authorities say the well is about 80 metres deep and narrow, with a diameter of around 40 centimetres, and it is dug using traditional methods. The operation in Brezina, in El Bayadh province, about 550 kilometres south of Algiers, involves heavy machinery digging a larger pit alongside the well. Civil protection reports that the well is dry and that rescuers struggle because Ayoub is trapped beneath a thick layer of soil.
