A man identified as Basit is beaten to death by a mob in Lagos Island, Lagos State, following an alleged hit-and-run. The incidents are reported to have occurred on Wednesday night, after residents said Basit knocked down a pedestrian and then drove away.

Across reports, Basit is described as having returned to Nigeria from abroad ahead of his wedding, which was about two weeks away. Witness accounts in the coverage say Basit was driving along Freeman Street when he allegedly hit a man attempting to cross the road. Residents pursue him after he reportedly does not stop, and he is eventually caught, after which a mob attacks him with objects such as sticks and bottles.

Police responses are presented differently by outlets. One report says the Lagos State police spokesperson was not reached for comment, while a police source confirms that suspects are arrested, with the deceased’s remains deposited in a morgue. The reports also note that the mob disperses after it appears Basit is no longer responding.
