IPC condemns attack on journalists returning from APC rally in Kano

The International Press Centre (IPC) Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub has condemned an attack on journalists who were returning from an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Kano State.    The incident took place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, after the journalists covered the Tinubu Support Group rally at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. A vehicle carrying reporters from several media organisations was attacked by hoodlums as they headed back.    According to a statement issued on Monday by Press Freedom Officer Melody Akinjiyan, the affected journalists included four staff members of Radio Nigeria’s Pyramid FM, a journalist from Guarantee Radio, and a reporter from Daily Trust. The attackers repeatedly struck the vehicle, injuring the driver and causing some of the journalists to be hit by broken glass from the damaged windows.     The IPC-SPJ Hub described the assault as a serious concern, noting that a Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM vehicle was damaged in the process.  IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade said the attack threatens press freedom and the safety of journalists covering political events. He stressed that media professionals should not face violence as campaigns and rallies intensify ahead of the general elections.  “The campaigns and rally just recently started, and journalists should not be subject to any form of attack at this time, when political activities are gradually increasing ahead of the general elections,” Arogundade stated.     The centre called on security agencies to strengthen protection for journalists covering political activities, especially at large gatherings where risks are higher. It also urged media organisations and reporters to carry out security assessments and remain safety-conscious while covering electoral and political events.
