Educationist and Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba receives a notice from the Election Commission of India over a discrepancy in the spelling/format of his name in electoral rolls. The notice comes during Karnataka’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of voter lists.
Multiple outlets report that Hajabba’s name appears differently in older and newer records. In the 2002 electoral roll, his name is recorded as “Hajabba,” while later official documents list him as “Harekala Hajabba.” He is also reported to have “Harekala Hajabba” on identity and official records such as his Aadhaar card, ration card, passport, and a newer voter ID.
The notice is delivered to him at his residence through Anganwadi workers, and he is directed to appear before the gram panchayat on September 11 with original documents to present his case. NDTV and the Free Press Journal both link the action to Karnataka’s ongoing SIR timeline, in which notices are issued during the “disposal of claims and objections” phase before the final electoral roll is published later in October.
