Major UK retailers, including Tesco, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis, are backing an industry-wide effort to help 100,000 young people enter retail roles by 2029. The initiative is led by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and partners with the Department for Work and Pensions.

The programme, called “Opening Shift,” is designed as work experience for young people aged 18 to 24. It is intended to create placements and pathways into retail employment across participating companies. Coverage highlights that more than 40 retailers are involved in the overall push, with multiple supermarket and department store brands signing up.

While both reports describe the same headline targets and participating firms, they focus differently on scope and framing. Retail Gazette emphasizes the scale of the participating industry and the specific work-experience mechanism. The Daily Record (Scotland) presents the same backing from major retailers but offers a shorter, higher-level overview of the bid to get young people into jobs.
