JSW Group and Volkswagen Group sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance talks for a proposed 51:49 joint venture covering Volkswagen’s passenger vehicle operations in India, spanning brands including Skoda and Volkswagen. The MoU launches exclusive negotiations covering valuation, business structure and other deal terms, with a binding agreement targeted by December 2026, subject to due diligence.

Across outlets, the projected scale is broadly similar: industry estimates suggest the venture’s investment and capital commitments could exceed €1 billion (about ₹10,000 crore), though final transaction value is not yet determined. The proposed partnership is expected to initially cover the eight Skoda and Volkswagen brands operating in India, including future models such as electric vehicles, and to focus on internal combustion, hybrids and EVs in mass-market segments. Sources also note possible inclusion of manufacturing sites, employees and supplier networks, with Volkswagen’s existing facilities at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Chakan cited as likely to be used.

While the MoU itself is non-binding, outlets flag that a Volkswagen customs duty dispute could affect valuation. The companies also discuss technology sharing, common platforms, workforce transition, sales and marketing, and consider India as a possible export base, particularly for EVs. Luxury brands are expected to remain outside the initial structure, with potential future inclusion.
