Singer Papi Urhobo (Stephen Ebihor) dies after illness

Stephen Ebihor, the Nigerian musician better known as Papi Urhobo, has died following a severe illness. Urhobo Worldwide, a digital community and cultural platform promoting Urhobo heritage, music, traditions and unity, announced his death in a statement posted on its Instagram page on Tuesday.   The platform revealed that he died on September 8 after battling illness.   In the statement, Urhobo Worldwide appealed to fans and the public to avoid sharing unverified information, particularly concerning the singer’s burial arrangements, until an official announcement is made by his family.     The platform added that the family would address the public in due course and urged well-wishers to keep the singer’s wife and children in their prayers.   “With profound sadness, we acknowledge the passing of our dear brother, friend, colleague, and fellow entertainer, Stephen Ebihor aka Papy Urhobo,” the statement read.   “We kindly appeal to the public, friends, colleagues, and fans to refrain from sharing unverified information or details about his burial arrangements until the family makes its official statement.   “The family will communicate with the public at the appropriate time. We appreciate everyone for the love, prayers, and support, and we urge friends and members of the public to put the wife and children he left behind in prayers at this difficult time. May Papy’s soul rest in perfect peace.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Urhoboworldwide_ (@urhoboworldwide_) Ebihor had previously disclosed that he was involved in an accident that left him with a cracked bone and impaired his mobility.   He had publicly appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance to undergo surgery, which he said would help him walk again.   In a later update, he expressed gratitude to those who contributed to his medical care.   Ebihor rose to national prominence with his distinctive vocal contribution to ‘Ogologomma,’ a track featured on Timaya’s debut studio album ‘True Story’ in 2007.   His performance on the song became one of its most memorable highlights and cemented his place in the memories of Nigerian music fans.
