Researchers use GPS collars to track individual lions and hyenas in the wild, mapping when and how the two species encounter each other across large territories.

The study addresses a long-standing assumption that spotted hyenas mainly follow lions to scavenge their kills. Instead, movement data indicate a different pattern: male lions are more likely to approach hyenas during encounters, while hyenas tend to move away and maintain safer distances. The data also suggest differences by sex and social rank.

Across reports, the core finding is consistent: the direction of pursuit or approach in lion–hyena encounters is not simply “hyenas shadowing lions.” The researchers collected high-resolution locations at frequent intervals over multiple years, enabling them to reconstruct thousands of interaction events and compare movement patterns among collared individuals. Context differs by outlet, but both describe GPS tracking across southern African protected areas as the basis for revising how the competitive relationship is understood.
