The EU’s General Court rejects Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s third attempt to annul EU sanctions imposed on him over Russia’s war in Ukraine. The decision keeps sanctions in place, after the court previously considered similar challenges.
Abramovich, a former owner of Chelsea FC with longstanding ties to the Kremlin, is included on the EU’s asset-freeze and visa-ban blacklist. According to one report, he argues the EU is targeting him unfairly and claims it is effectively “exploiting” his public notoriety. Other reporting frames the case as Abramovich’s continued legal effort to overturn measures first imposed in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
