An AI-designed experimental drug, rentosertib, shows signs of shifting patients’ estimated biological age younger during a 12-week clinical trial analysis, according to a study published in Nature Biotechnology. The work uses multiple AI-based “aging clocks” applied to blood samples from 42 participants, comparing changes over time against predictions made at the start of treatment.

The drug was developed by Insilico Medicine and was originally designed to target pathways involved in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a progressive lung-scarring disease. In the analysis, all six aging clocks predicted lower aging scores for participants who received rentosertib, while the placebo or no-treatment group showed little change or slight increases. Some outlets highlight that the clocks’ agreement across different methods supports the finding, while others caution that biological age measurements are not standardized.

Across outlets, there is agreement that the trial is small and involves only people with IPF, and that the results do not yet show that the drug extends lifespan or reverses aging in a literal sense. Both sources note that additional clinical testing and regulatory review are still ahead, and that aging-clock interpretations remain an area of scientific debate.
