More than 10,000 Kedarnath pilgrims are reported to have been rescued after a landslide and related debris blocked the pilgrimage route in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. According to officials, the landslide occurs between Sonprayag and Gaurikund late on Tuesday night following heavy rainfall. Debris from the incident blocks the main road, leaving a large number of pilgrims stranded along the route.
Rescue operations begin after the District Control Room in Rudraprayag alerts the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at 9:16 pm. Teams stationed along the route maintain alertness, and a rescue party from Sonprayag moves to the affected area with equipment. Subsequently, SDRF and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) carry out a joint relief and rescue effort.
Sources report that the joint teams guide evacuated pilgrims across the blocked stretch despite ongoing difficulties, including continuous rockfalls, heavy rain, darkness, and difficult mountainous terrain. Reports indicate that at least about 10,450 pilgrims were evacuated, bringing the total number rescued to over 10,000.
