Apple’s upcoming iPhone Duo is designed to work with Apple Pencil, but support is limited to the Apple Pencil model that uses a USB-C connector. According to Apple’s guidance cited by outlets, the iPhone Duo supports pairing and basic Pencil functionality, while the Apple Pencil Pro is not supported.
The limitation is widely attributed to charging and mounting differences. Multiple reports say the Apple Pencil Pro relies on magnetic attachment for charging with compatible iPads, and that mechanism does not translate to the iPhone Duo. In contrast, the Apple Pencil with USB-C pairs over a cable and charges through a USB-C port, with a hidden connector behind a sliding cap. Apple states the Pencil works with both the inner and outer displays.
Apple also describes the feature set of the USB-C Pencil on iPhone, noting it provides core input and tilt sensitivity but omits several capabilities found on the Pencil Pro and other newer iPad setups, such as pressure sensitivity and certain gestures. Reports also say iPhone Duo Pencil support will not be available immediately at launch and instead arrives later in the year.
The iPhone Duo launches October 23, with pre-orders beginning October 16, per the reports.
