IBM and NASA launch a new public AI tool designed to help map ice and craters on the Moon. The model, described as a “Lunar Foundation Model,” is intended to support analysis of lunar surface features by identifying patterns in existing mission observations.
The tool is trained using data collected by multiple NASA instruments across several missions. According to reporting, it draws on information from nine instruments on four NASA missions, combining different types of measurements to improve how researchers interpret the lunar environment. This approach is aimed at making it easier for scientists to process complex remote-sensing data and generate mapping outputs.
