JAXA’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission is preparing to reach Phobos and return samples to Earth, supported by a newly produced surface atlas of the moon. The MMX spacecraft is planned to launch in October, arrive at Phobos in 2027, and—if the mission succeeds—bring material back to Earth in 2031.

The atlas is described as a “morphodynamic” surface map, designed to help mission teams interpret Phobos’ terrain and select suitable locations for sampling.
