Researchers report that exposure to light during sleep—even at low levels above about 3 lux—is associated with measurable changes in heart structure and function that could increase long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. The findings come from analyses of UK Biobank participants who wear wrist light sensors and later undergo cardiac MRI.

In the European Heart Journal study, people who experienced higher nighttime light showed signs consistent with cardiac remodeling, including slightly greater left ventricular muscle mass and wall thickness and reduced measures of heart contraction. The changes are small and do not by themselves indicate diagnosed cardiovascular disease, but they suggest a possible pathway toward conditions such as heart failure or atrial fibrillation (AFib). The research also notes that shorter sleep and sleep quality may account for part of the relationship.
