Hundreds of APC members in Kwara’s Offa defect to PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has suffered another setback as hundreds of its members in Offa Local Government Area defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).The defectors came from several wards, including Shawo Central Ward, the political base of Senator Lola Ashiru, who represents Kwara South and the governor’s own ward.Speaking during the defection on Tuesday, leader of the Shawo Central Ward group, Ezekiel Adepoju, said the move was motivated by confidence in the leadership of former Senate President and PDP chieftain, Bukola Saraki.“We are convinced that the PDP remains the better platform for the political future of Offa and Kwara State,” Adepoju stated.The defection was followed by a solidarity rally by women in Shawo Central Ward, who sang traditional songs and pledged to mobilise voters for the PDP ahead of 2027.In a separate development, another group of APC members from the governor’s ward also announced their defection. Their leader, Taofeek Mohammed, said the decision reflected disappointment with the APC administration and questioned the governor’s grassroots support.“For a governor who has repeatedly presented himself as a leader with strong grassroots support, the continued loss of hundreds of supporters from his own ward raises serious questions about his performance and connection with the people,” Mohammed said.He added that political strength should be measured by the confidence of voters, not government propaganda or social media activity.The defectors pledged to mobilise more residents to join the PDP, describing the movement as a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
