NPCI launches two new UPI capabilities—UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI—aimed at making payments faster and easier to manage. Announced by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra at Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026, the updates extend UPI beyond app-based use and add AI-supported tools for handling payment information and controls.

UPI Tap & Pay lets users make payments by tapping an NFC-enabled smartphone near a merchant’s POS terminal, without opening a payments app or scanning a QR code. The transaction relies on the merchant terminal’s internet connection, which is intended to help where mobile connectivity is weak or unavailable. Reports also say payments of up to Rs 5,000 can be made without a UPI PIN, while higher-value transactions require PIN entry.

MyUPI expands the existing UPI Help service with AI-powered features. It provides consolidated details on payment records, AutoPay mandates, beneficiary information, and supports transaction dispute handling and payment controls. It also includes options such as repeating transactions and multilingual assistance, and it offers a “Safety Switch” to block UPI debits if suspicious activity is detected.
