Taiwanese prosecutors are seeking to detain three individuals over an alleged semiconductor-smuggling scheme involving advanced Nvidia AI chips shipped to China using forged export documents. Multiple outlets report that the investigation is Taiwan’s first formal crackdown of this kind and centers on the alleged falsification of paperwork to export restricted US-origin servers containing Nvidia Hopper-class chips.
According to Bloomberg and other reports, the alleged shipments move through Japan as an intermediate step. Prosecutors suspect the defendants first export the servers to Japan, then route them onward to customers in mainland China in a manner designed to bypass US export restrictions. One report adds that the case is linked to a wider diversion network involving Supermicro, with servers and systems routed through third-party locations.
Several outlets also note that the broader context involves how Chinese firms access American AI chips through rentals or hardware installed in overseas data centers, including via third countries. Prosecutors allege at least one successful shipment reached China after the Japan transshipment step, and they describe the three suspects as having role(s) in using false documents to facilitate the exports.
