Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal says a US trade team is likely to visit India next month for talks with Indian counterparts. He made the statement after noting that India visited Washington, DC, in April for an in-person round of meetings aimed at finalising details of an interim trade arrangement and advancing negotiations under the broader bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
Goyal also addressed whether the US chief negotiator for the BTA would travel with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He said the chief negotiator is not coming with Rubio, but there is a plan for US representatives to come next month. Separately, Rubio is scheduled to undertake a four-day visit to India beginning May 23, described as his first visit to the country. The trip is intended to build further cooperation across trade, defence and energy.
The discussions follow a February 7 joint statement in which India and the US finalised a framework for an interim trade agreement. Business Standard adds that a US Supreme Court ruling has struck down reciprocal tariffs that had been central to the Trump administration’s approach, shaping the negotiation environment going forward.
