Hong Kong’s financial secretary, Paul Chan Mo-po, says the city is broadening and deepening ties with the Global South and Middle East, with cooperation spanning finance, innovation and technology (I&T) and the green transition. Chan makes the remarks as part of ongoing efforts described by government officials to strengthen links with Belt and Road regions.
According to reporting, Chan says Hong Kong is working to build “networked and institutionalised” connectivity, linking the city to emerging economies worldwide. The Global South is described as a group of developing, less-industrialised countries, mainly in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Outlets also frame the agenda as extending from the Middle East to Central Asia through Belt and Road relationships, with an emphasis on multi-sector partnerships rather than a single policy area.
