The News Broadcasting & Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) fines Zee News Rs 2 lakh over what it calls inflammatory coverage of pro-Palestine slogans during a student protest at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The order is dated September 11 and relates to broadcasts aired on August 16, 2025.
According to reports, the complaint is filed by Talha Mannan, an AMU alumnus and PhD scholar. He says his speech and the context of the protest—linked to a fee hike and demands for restoration of the students’ union—are presented selectively, with the channel portraying Palestine solidarity expressions as criminal or anti-national. The NBDSA notes the exclusion of the protest’s main purpose and points to inflammatory on-screen elements and tickers used during coverage.
Across outlets, the regulator’s key actions are the same: Zee News is directed to remove the footage from its website, YouTube, and other platforms, including links that provide access to the broadcasts. One report adds that, at the time of publication, the footage was still available on Zee News’ YouTube channel.
