Mangaluru police say that many students identified as testing positive for drug use are now testing negative following counselling and follow-up checks. The Police Commissioner reports that about 75% of the students who originally tested positive in drug screening have later tested negative, indicating improvement after an intervention focused on young people.

Police say they screened more than 8,000 students in the city and found 98 students who tested positive. Those students receive counselling and are involved with their families as part of a rehabilitation approach alongside police action. According to one report, follow-up testing later showed that 38 students no longer tested positive, while the remaining cases would still be under monitoring and intervention.

Across the accounts, the central elements are consistent: drug screening in schools, identification of positive cases, counselling with family involvement, and re-testing to track outcomes. Differences mainly relate to how outlets describe the method’s impact—such as the reported percentage figure versus specific follow-up counts—and the framing of the initiative as enforcement combined with rehabilitation.
