The Indian government says coal supply to power plants in Punjab remains adequate for continued electricity generation. The ministry adds that Coal India Limited (CIL) is committed to uninterrupted fuel supply across the country, including to Punjab.
However, the ministry also points to an issue on the logistics and procurement side. While CIL offers coal to Punjab’s independent power producers (IPPs), the state and generators are booking and lifting coal in volumes that are below the quantities allocated. The ministry says Punjab needs to improve offtake from mines to ensure allocations translate into actual liftings and plant consumption.
Across the two reports, both describe coal availability as sufficient while highlighting a gap between allocated quantities and what is being operationally taken from mines. NDTV specifically notes CIL’s offer of additional coal to Punjab’s IPPs, while Business Line emphasizes overall adequacy and the ministry’s call for better mine offtake.
