India’s Cockroach Janata/Cockroach Janta Party, a satirical youth movement that began online, holds its first major street protest in New Delhi. Multiple outlets report that the movement’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, arrives in the capital ahead of the demonstration, after living in the United States for about two years. The protest is framed as the movement’s first foray from social media into “street politics,” following weeks in which it attracted large online attention and news coverage.

Reports say the group draws on humour and parody political messaging, using “cockroach” imagery as a symbol. The movement targets Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, with organisers linking their campaign to grievances including unemployment and inflation. Some accounts of the coverage also note that Dipke has said he feared he could be arrested if he returns to India.

While the movement remains a parody, authorities prepare for the event, including police presence around the planned location near Jantar Mantar. One outlet reports the organisers receive permission for the demonstration.
