South Korea says it is ready to provide medical equipment to a North Korean hospital if Pyongyang requests it. A unification ministry report submitted to opposition lawmaker Kim Dai-sik says Seoul has secured United Nations approval and budgetary arrangements to carry out the potential aid.
The report states Seoul would supply 166 types of medical equipment to Kangdong County Hospital in Pyongyang, described as the first hospital completed under North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s campaign to build factories and medical facilities. The ministry says the equipment would cover needs for diagnosis, surgery, and treatment, though it does not specify the exact items in public reporting.
Both outlets also note that existing UN sanctions restrict industrial supplies to North Korea, including medical equipment. Seoul says it has obtained a sanctions exemption from the UN Security Council sanctions committee to enable the proposed transfer, rather than proceeding without permission.
