Tinubu allocates EFCC-recovered property to NDPC as its new permanent headquarters

President Bola Tinubu has approved the allocation of a property recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) as its permanent headquarters.The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced the development during the commissioning ceremony in Abuja, noting that the move addresses the commission’s long-standing need for a befitting office space.Tijani explained that the President’s directive reflects a commitment to putting recovered assets to productive use. “A property once associated with corruption is now dedicated to protecting Nigerians and strengthening trust in our digital economy,” he said.He highlighted Tinubu’s early support for the agency, including signing the Nigeria Data Protection Act in 2023 and directing ministries and departments to comply with data protection frameworks. Tijani also stressed the importance of stronger safeguards as Nigeria’s digital economy expands, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence.NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, revealed that the EFCC approved the property in July 2025, with renovations beginning in March 2026. He described the new headquarters as a turning point for an institution that started in 2022 with just 12 staff and minimal funding.Since then, the commission has:Licensed 356 DPCOs, creating over 27,000 jobs in three years.Generated ₦12bn revenue and built a data privacy ecosystem valued at ₦18bn.Trained nearly 100,000 people through 220 programmes and enrolled 66,000 Nigerians in its virtual privacy academy.Established 17 privacy clubs across universities, with 6,176 student ambassadors.Signed 28 MoUs with international organisations, including Canada, Morocco, Kenya, and Ghana.Mrs Watira Fitto, NDPC’s Head of People Management, said the new facility, with 56 office spaces in Abuja’s Mbora District, reflects the commission’s growth and institutional stability after operating from four different locations in just four years.
