China launches an industrial production line to extract rubidium and caesium from lithium-related waste. The demonstration facility in Jiangxi province runs a continuous process aimed at recovering low-grade rubidium (Rb) and caesium (Cs). The Institute of Process Engineering under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) says the line achieves stable production after reaching operational targets.

Outlets describe the project as a “world first” industrial-scale effort for these elements. Reported annual capacity is 500 tonnes, using tower-based extraction and separation. One outlet emphasizes the technical novelty and continuous separation method, while the other highlights the industrialization step beyond laboratory-scale work. Both sources say the plant draws on lithium production tailings and/or spent lithium-ion batteries as raw material inputs, positioning it as a way to improve recycling economics while reducing waste volumes. Rubidium and caesium are described as critical rare alkali metals used in high-tech fields including aerospace, quantum technologies, and precision timekeeping and sensing applications.
