Air India’s board meets in Mumbai as the airline prepares for a leadership change, with former Ethiopian Airlines Group chief Tewolde Gebremariam expected to formally take over later this month. The meeting is chaired by N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, and focuses on issues including the compensation package for the incoming chief executive, according to sources.
Current CEO and managing director Campbell Wilson is set to step down this month after leading Air India’s transformation since July 2022. Board members are also expected to formally acknowledge Wilson’s contributions. The board includes independent directors Sanjiv Mehta, Alice G Vaidyan and P R Ramesh, along with non-executive non-independent directors P B Balaji and Goh Choon Phong.
Both outlets note that Air India is still dealing with multiple pressures, including financial losses, operational disruptions, geopolitical uncertainty, and fuel-price volatility, as well as the aftermath of the fatal AI171 accident in June last year that resulted in 260 deaths. In separate coverage, both cite Gebremariam’s September 7 townhall message to staff—“Make Air India Great Again (MAGA)”—and Chandrasekaran’s emphasis on safety and cost consciousness. Coverage differs mainly in the reported meeting date (Tuesday versus September 15) and the level of detail on specific transition planning.
