The study shows First Nations people suffered an estimated 93 percent population loss in less than 80 years following the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Frontier violence and disease contributed to that loss, with the present Indigenous population put at only 37 percent of the pre-European estimate of 2.2 million people across Australia.
