U.S. immigration authorities detain exiled Nicaraguan journalist Luis Galeano in Florida, according to his family and press freedom advocates. Multiple outlets report that ICE agents pull him over while he is driving in Orlando and take him into custody on September 14.
Galeano, who has been living in the United States since 2018, runs the radio and internet program Café con Voz and continues to publish critical reporting about Daniel Ortega’s government. The Committee to Protect Journalists says his asylum request is pending and calls for ICE to release him, citing the status of his U.S. asylum process. The Guardian reports he has had an asylum application pending for about seven years, and that his wife says he has a work permit and a Social Security number.
