The Anambra State Government disputes former governor Peter Obi’s claim that he left more than ₦2.13 billion in an “ecological fund” account when he handed over power in 2014. The government says the account Obi cited does not represent an ecological fund and challenges him to explain where the money was kept.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, says First Bank records show account number 2018779464 was an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Consolidated Revenue Account, not an ecological fund account. He adds that a certified statement covering the account’s history from 2011 onwards shows no such balance, whether as inflows or as remaining funds.
Obi, however, rejects the state’s position and maintains that the money was a federal allocation for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion control project released shortly before he left office. He says the funds were intentionally left untouched in the First Bank account and separates this from a separate dispute in which he says his administration also handed over over ₦75 billion in savings.
