A five-year multinational research project finds microplastics present in agricultural soils across Europe and says the particles can act like a “Trojan horse,” potentially delivering pollutants, pesticides and bacteria through soil.

The study is EU-funded and reports results from 227 agricultural fields in 11 European countries. Across those sites, microplastics are detected in all sampled soil. Researchers describe how plastic surfaces may form hotspots where other biological and chemical materials concentrate, citing evidence that can include antibiotic-resistant genes alongside microbes. The project has produced 22 peer-reviewed studies so far.
