Playground Games’ director says the long development cycle for Xbox’s Fable reboot was allowed to continue because internal Xbox support treats the franchise as central to the platform. Ralph Fulton, speaking to The Guardian, says “many people within Xbox” view Fable as “vital to the DNA of the platform,” helping shield the project from hardship during an unusually turbulent period for other Xbox games.

Both outlets report that Microsoft acquired Playground in 2018 and that Fable is the studio’s first non-Forza project, following the company’s work on Forza Horizon titles. They add that Playground builds a dedicated second team for the reboot and that the effort continues to replace Lionhead, which previously developed Fable games until it was shut down by Microsoft in 2016.

The coverage also notes the broader context: some other Xbox studios and projects have been canceled or shuttered, while Fable proceeds. The outlets differ mainly in emphasis—one focuses on the “protected” nature of Fable’s development, while the other highlights the director’s explanation for why it receives that protection and the reboot’s updated release window and story focus.
