Activists from the Global Sumud Gaza flotilla say they were beaten and mistreated while held in Israeli detention after Israeli forces intercepted their boats in international waters. Multiple passengers, now returned to their home countries, describe physical injuries, including bruising, and some report being held on stretchers or in wheelchairs. Several activists allege torture and sexual violence, including claims of rape, while they were in custody.
After the activists’ return, Israel’s Foreign Ministry rejects the allegations and posts online that some injuries were “staged” for cameras. France 24 reports Israel cited an activist pictured in a neck brace who reportedly appeared to be recovering after arriving home without it, and described this as evidence against the claims.
The BBC and other outlets report that activists have returned to the UK, Turkey and other destinations following deportations from Israel. According to Egypt Independent, the flotilla carried hundreds of passengers and humanitarian supplies, including food and medicine, headed toward Gaza. Israel denies wrongdoing and disputes the activists’ accounts.
