Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II says one of his regrets as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor was delaying the entry of telecommunications companies (telcos) into Nigeria’s financial services sector. He raises the issue during the launch of the 2026 Access to Financial Services in Nigeria (A2F) survey by Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access (EFInA).

Sanusi argues that telcos already have infrastructure and reach that could help expand financial inclusion, especially in underserved areas. He also says financial inclusion should not be judged only by the number of people with accounts or who can transfer money, but by whether people can earn more and move out of poverty. He links financial services to productive activities such as agriculture and manufacturing, citing examples involving farmers and local supply quality.

Different outlets emphasize different angles. Vanguard and Nigerian Eye focus on his regret and rationale around inclusion, while Daily Post highlights that his earlier decision was influenced by concerns about depositor safety after Nigeria’s banking crisis. Across reports, Sanusi also calls for CBN priorities including price stability to protect savings and using transaction data to support savings, pension, and insurance products.
