The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) owes municipalities and other landlords about R17.89 million in unpaid rent across seven offices, according to reports citing statements by the Social Development Minister.
The outstanding amount includes R16.5 million at SASSA’s national Records Management Centre, with the remainder owed across other offices. The reports describe the arrears as rent that has not been paid to landlords and municipal entities responsible for the properties.
While both outlets focus on the same figures and number of offices, the reporting differs slightly in how the totals are presented—one cites R17.89 million and the other describes the amount as “nearly R18 million.” Both frame the issue as a debt covering multiple locations rather than a single property, and they attribute the information to the minister’s remarks.
