The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt branch, has declared an indefinite strike over the incomplete payment of salaries and responsibility allowances to its members.The action follows the university management’s failure to resolve the issues despite a meeting and earlier assurances that the demands would be addressed.In a statement released on Thursday, the branch secretary, Tarila Amakoromo, said an emergency congress held on Friday, September 11, 2026, gave the administration 48 working hours, ending at midnight on Tuesday, September 15,  to settle the outstanding payments or face an indefinite local strike supported by the national body.When the deadline passed without resolution, another emergency congress on Wednesday, September 16, formally declared the indefinite strike.The union listed its key grievances as:Incomplete payment of lecturers’ salaries for June, July and August 2026Incomplete payment of responsibility allowancesNon-payment of responsibility allowance to members under CONMESS and CONHESS (lecturers in the School of Health Sciences)Sidelining of ASUU members in the monthly payment of responsibility allowances that other unions have received for more than two yearsAmakoromo noted that university officials met with the union on September 11 and promised a response before the deadline, but no action followed.During the strike, ASUU members are barred from giving lectures, conducting or invigilating examinations, or participating in any official duties or statutory meetings. A strike monitoring team has been set up to enforce compliance across the university’s campuses and centres.
