Nigeria’s opposition coalition forms Central Leadership Committee for 2027 polls

The Central Leadership Committee of the opposition coalition, established at the August 31 Summit of Opposition Parties, has held its inaugural meeting as part of efforts to field a single candidate against the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.The meeting took place on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. In a statement signed on September 17 by Salihu Mohammed Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the committee announced that its working groups are expected to begin operations during the week of September 21 to 27.Members agreed on operational principles designed to guarantee equal opportunity and mutual respect among the participating opposition parties. A key decision was that the chairmanship of the committee’s meetings would rotate among the parties in alphabetical order. The arrangement was adopted on the principle that “a coalition founded upon equality must demonstrate equality in its own conduct.”The committee reviewed the communiqué from the August summit and began implementing its resolutions, with particular focus on activating the Publicity Committee, Legal Committee, and the five Working Groups set up by the summit.Participating parties were directed to submit the names of their nominees to the Secretariat by the close of work on Friday, September 18. The committee also resolved to expand the coalition to include other opposition parties that have expressed interest in joining the initiative.It is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday, September 23, and plans to meet regularly as it works to unite opposition parties and present a common front in the 2027 elections.
