S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a blockchain smart-contract security platform. OpenZeppelin says its tools and smart contracts have supported more than $37 trillion in value transfers. The companies have not disclosed the financial terms of the deal.

The outlets describe the purchase as part of S&P Global’s broader effort to address technology and operational risks in tokenized and onchain finance. CoinDesk and The Block frame the acquisition as targeting security challenges relevant to banks and asset managers operating on blockchain networks. CoinDesk also notes that S&P Global’s deal aligns with earlier investments, including its market-data purchase of Kaiko.

According to The Block, OpenZeppelin will continue operating as a standalone business unit after the acquisition. Overall, sources agree on the deal’s purpose—strengthening onchain security and risk assessment capabilities—while emphasizing different strategic context, such as S&P Global’s investment activity and the specific focus on tokenized finance risk.
