Sony launches “Live TV on PS5,” a free, ad-supported streaming TV service that lets PlayStation 5 owners access 100+ channels of TV and movies through the console. The service is backed by Sony Pictures Television and is designed to broaden the reach of Sony’s content and advertising opportunities.
Sony Pictures Television chairman Keith Le Goy explains the strategy as leveraging the existing engagement of PlayStation users. In comments to Variety and summarized by GameSpot, he says Sony targets a “very hard-to-reach” audience by placing linear-style viewing in an environment PS5 owners already use. He describes the effort as a “one plus one” outcome—combining PlayStation’s large, highly engaged user base with TV channel partnerships to create additional value for advertisers.
Outlets also place the move in context of the FAST market. The service uses a model similar to other free ad-supported streaming platforms, such as Tubi, Roku, and Pluto. Both sources note Sony previously offered paid live TV via PlayStation Vue, which shut down in 2020, highlighting this shift from subscription to advertising-supported viewing.
