China’s coast guard disputes the account. A Chinese coast guard spokesperson says the Philippine vessel disregards “repeated solemn warnings” and deliberately changes course to “cut across the bow” of a Chinese coast guard vessel. The two sides also frame the event differently in terms of legal responsibility, with Beijing alleging the Philippines violates international law.
While the Philippine side characterizes the act as a deliberate ramming by the Chinese coast guard, the Chinese side says it was responding to Philippine maneuvering.
