Scientists and forecasters say a potentially “super” El Niño is rapidly taking shape in the Pacific Ocean. Multiple reports note that sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific are warming quickly, which is a key signal typically associated with El Niño development. However, researchers caution that the strength and ultimate impact of the event are not yet certain. A major factor highlighted across sources is the role of winds and their variability: weakening trade winds can either intensify (“turbocharge”) or limit (“throttle”) the developing conditions. At present, scientists say the atmospheric shifts that would most strongly determine how powerful the El Niño becomes have not clearly locked in, and these interactions are known to be complex and difficult to forecast. Because of this, forecasters say it is too early to confidently predict whether the event will reach “history-making” levels. Ongoing monitoring of ocean and atmosphere conditions is therefore expected as models update and the system evolves.
