A third beluga from Canada’s shuttered Marineland dies after being moved to Spain, Oceanografic Valencia says. The aquarium reports that “Jelly Bean” dies suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday. Oceanografic Valencia also says it received the beluga as part of a larger transfer from the Niagara Falls, Ont., facility.
Oceanografic Valencia took in Jelly Bean and another beluga, Cleopatra, in late August. The move includes additional animals beyond the two belugas: Global News reports that four bottlenose dolphins were also transferred as part of the same arrangement. The reports frame the death as the latest in a sequence affecting Marineland’s remaining whales following the facility’s closure and subsequent moves.
