The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registers a first information report (FIR) in a case involving Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and alleged fraud linked to investments in Reliance Capital Limited (RCAP). The FIR is filed based on a written complaint from LIC and names RCAP, Anil D. Ambani (former chairman), Satish Seth and others, including unidentified public servants and additional individuals.

According to the CBI, LIC subscribed to five non-convertible debentures (NCDs) totaling ₹3,900 crore issued by RCAP between April 2012 and March 2018 for corporate purposes, funding requirements and refinancing of existing debt. LIC alleges that the accused conspired to induce the investments through misrepresentation and then diverted the funds, causing a wrongful loss of ₹2,684.57 crore to LIC and corresponding wrongful gains to beneficiaries.

Outlets broadly report the same allegation framework and the scope of investigation, including tracing end-use of funds and examining conspiracy, cheating and related offences. The accounts also reference prior CBI action in related Reliance-sector matters and note that an Anil Ambani spokesperson denies any wrongdoing and says the FIR pertains to RCAP; Ambani’s role is described as chairman/non-executive director until the RBI superseded the board in November 2021.
